Gertrude Street Yoga was founded in the 90's and is an urban centre for yoga, wellness, and community. We value yoga as a holistic practice, one that often begins on the mat but that expands into all aspects of life.


We offer a variety of classes, workshops, courses, trainings, and retreats that focus on developing the physical practice of asana, as well as pranayama (breathwork), meditation, and many other aspects of yoga. Additionally we have a number of holistic health and wellness services through our Healing Centre offered by a group of dedicated practitioners. Through all of our offerings we encourage the cultivation of a body-mind connection as well as self-inquiry and inner exploration.


Rather than teaching from a specific lineage, our teachers offer classes influenced by their own varied and diverse trainings, experiences and practices; allowing them to tap into their creativity and develop classes that they are truly passionate about. This gives students a broad range of styles to explore and encourages them find and develop an authentic and meaningful practice.

Located in the historic Johnson Furniture Building, Gertrude Street Yoga is often described as feeling like a home away from home. The spaces remain true to their heritage and feature original hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, and large warehouse style windows. The main studio features high ceilings and wall-to-wall windows that fill the space with natural light. The second smaller studio features north-facing arch windows that overlook the treetops of Fitzroy and let the morning sun stream in.

Class Styles

  • Vinyasa Flow

    Our Vinyasa Flow class is a strong and dynamic practice that offers the opportunity to flow continuously from pose to pose, creating natural heat in the body, increasing circulation and building strength, stamina, and cardiovascular fitness. All levels of students are welcome and modifications are offered to students who are newer to practicing Yoga. The Vinyasa style of yoga connects movement (asana) with breath, resulting in a creative and energetic practice.

  • Vinyasa Align

    Our Vinyasa Align class is a strong and challenging practice that weaves together anatomical alignment and functional movement, together with the signature flow and creative sequencing of the vinyasa style. This class will often focus on a particular area or function of the body or build up to a peak pose.

  • Vinyasa Fundamentals

    Our Vinyasa Fundamentals class focuses on the foundations of a vinyasa practice and is recommended for all students looking to refine or learn basic techniques in order to create a strong, safe, and sustainable yoga practice. Expect to break down classic postures and transitions and learn subtle engagements and connections that will transform your practice. Suitable for all levels of practice including those brand new to yoga.

  • Slow Flow

    Our Slow Flow class is a gentle and fluid vinyasa class that is accessible to all levels. No peak poses or fancy inversions, just feel good, creative movement.

  • Yin Yang

    Our Yin Yang class brings together the movement and flow of a more dynamic practice, and the deep stretching and meditative relaxation of a yin practice. Expect fluid movement to warm up the body and connect to the breath for the first 30 minutes of class and then transition into the long holds of yin poses to stretch deep into the connective tissues (fascia) of the body. This class is suitable for all levels.

  • Yin

    Our Yin Class is the perfect balance to a more dynamic Yoga practice, cardio exercise, or time spent sitting at a desk. Yin offers long, meditative holds to delve into the deep connective tissues of the body, moving through postures that focus on relaxing the muscles to stretch deep connective tissues (fascia), releasing stress and tension throughout the entire body, resulting in greater mobility that facilitates structural and mental balance. All levels of students are welcome.

  • Kundalini

    Kundalini Yoga is a unique combination of postures, breathing techniques, sound and meditation threaded together in a specific sequence that targets an aspect of self to develop. Each class is different, with a focus to breathe as you move, while you connect with awareness and acceptance. This is a style of Yoga in which you conquer the mind, expand your consciousness, improve your physical and mental health as well as your creativity. It is a practice of self care and maintenance. All classes are suitable for beginners through to advanced students of yoga. We generally recommend trying out 3-4 classes in order to gauge a true idea of this practice and what it can do for you.
